A short drive north of Cairns and you come to Holloways Beach - and excellent beach for swimming, sand play, walking and playing.
At the first carpark you see, there is a playground with swings and a grassy area to play. Dogs are not allowed off the leash until further north of this area. There are public toilets and showers here, and if the stinger net is out then that is the only place you want to be swimming! Stinger season is roughly October to May in North QLD. If in doubt ask one of the lifeguards on duty. If you dont fancy a swim, Holloways Beach is an excellent beach for a long walk or run.
Our family enjoys Holloways Beach in the afternoons as the sun sets behind the trees along the sand, leaving lovely cool shady sand areas to play. We have also often enjoyed the sea breeze as a way to cool off in the summer. It is a great way to relax after work. There are lots of interesting sticks and seeds to decorate sand castles with, and there are also BBQ's close by for dinner (if you are organised!)
After a big play, there is nothing like a cold smoothie. There is a great cafe on the beach complete with seats in the shape of hands sculpted out of wood - the kids love sitting in the hands! The mango smoothies are huge and delicious - the staff will usually split one smoothie into two smaller cups for the kids - half a smoothie each is more than enough for our kids - unless mum or dad are sneaking too many sips!
The cafe and restaurant here at Holloways Beach are the only one's truly "on the beach". It is lovely sitting near the sand and water, especially as the full moon rises.
If you dont care for the BBQ or cafes, and your kids dont mind the odd dog wandering by, then further north up the beach is a particularly nice area to play - quieter and more relaxed. Just bypass the first car park and continue to drive until you see a right turn heading towards Casuarina St

Clifton Beach is the first beach south of Palm Cove and has a very similar feel, with palm trees and grassy areas next to the sand. There is a lovely shaded playground and BBQ area close to the stinger net. There is ample shade under the trees at the beach and on the grassy areas. The playground and beach can both get quite sunny, however, so be sun smart here!more info
Machans Beach is the closest beach to Cairns city. Unfortunately the beach was prone to severe erosion many years ago and a large rock wall was erected to prevent the road and houses from falling into the ocean.more info
