Machans Beach

Machans Beach is the closest beach to Cairns city. Unfortunately the beach was prone to severe erosion many years ago and a large rock wall was erected to prevent the road and houses from falling into the ocean. However, if you head north a short distance to the end of the road, there is a large stretch of beach that is wonderful for afternoon strolls, sandcastle making or games or football and cricket. You are quite safe on the sandy areas, but be aware of the dangers of the ocean and creeks here. Stay clear of all waterways as there are crocodiles about and no stinger net for swimming.

Clifton Beach

Clifton Beach is the first beach south of Palm Cove and has a very similar feel, with palm trees and grassy areas next to the sand. There is a lovely shaded playground and BBQ area close to the stinger net. There is ample shade under the trees at the beach and on the grassy areas. The playground and beach can both get quite sunny, however, so be sun smart here!
